Por todos es conocido lo que es un shinai, pero ¿para qué sirve?.
Un shinai representa una espada, y por tanto debería servir para matar, pero no es así. Si atendemos a la historia, la Katana fue sustituida en primer término por el bokken, precisamente para que no fuera letal, y éste a su vez por el shinai, para resultar aún menos lesivo.
Por tanto no debería ser considerado un arma, puesto que su fin no es herir, pero debemos tratarla como tal para que pueda cumplir su función.
El bokken no permitía la entrega total que se debía dar en un combate real. Esa entrega total se conoce como sutemi. Por eso aparece el shinai , para poder atacar dejando todo atrás pero sin que ninguno de los practicantes sufra ningún daño. Kendo pasa entonces a otro nivel. Lejos de ver quién es más rápido se convierte en un diálogo sincero entre dos personas. Y para poder hacerlo correctamente, en este diálogo hay que empatizar. Hay que ponerse en el lugar del otro a nivel muy profundo y percibir lo que él siente. Llegado este punto se comparte agotamiento, ansiedad, duda, miedo. Hemos creado una conexión y hemos conseguido ver dentro de la otra persona.
Esta conexión requiere que los dos entiendan que un combate de Kendo es a muerte, para que los dos puedan tener un diálogo sincero. Pero la muerte no se produce, y eso es gracias al shinai. Una vez conectados, los sentimiento de victoria y de derrota se acercaran, y el primero no sabe tan dulce ahora que percibimos la derrota en el adversario, y esta última se mezcla con un reconocimiento a la labor del otro.
Y cuando somos capaces de realizar todo esto ¿cómo detenerlo?. No se puede; una vez que eres capaz de ver dentro de los demás ya no puedes cerrar esa puerta y te vuelves cada vez más receptivo con los demás.
Mientras escribía esto he descubierto (vía un tweet de@hacesQUE) que este concepto tiene un nombre en japonés: Ko ken chi aira; pero para mi se resume con la frase que se puede leer en el do de mi maestro, Jesús González: “no se puede ser mejor kenshin que persona” y es que el verdadero crecimiento en kendo tiene este precio. Llegado un punto no se puede crecer en una sin crecer en la otra.
¿Para qué sirve un shinai entonces?
Un shinai sirve para conectar gente, y cuando lo empleamos correctamente no toca men, kote ni do… sino que toca el corazón de las personas
What Everyone knows what a shinai is, but what is it for?
A shinai represents a sword and therefore should be used to kill, but that is not true. According to history, the Katana was replaced primarily by the bokken precisely because it was not so lethal and this was replaced by the shinai to be even less harmful.

We have created a connection and we got to see inside the other person.
This connection requires that both parts understand that Kendo is a death fight, in order to have a sincere dialogue. But death does not occur, and that is thanks to the shinai. Once connected, the feeling of victory and defeat will come closer, the first does not taste as sweet now that you perceive the defeat on the adversary and the latter is mixed with an appreciation for the work of the other.
And when we are able to do all this how to stop it?. You can not, once you are able to see inside others you can not close that door and you become increasingly receptive to others.
While writing this I have discovered (via @hacesQUE) that this concept has a name in Japanese: Ko ken chi aira; but for me it is summarized by the phrase that can be read in my master’s do: “You can not be better kenshin than person” and is that the real growth in kendo has this price. At one point you can not grow without growing in the other.
So, what is the finality of a shinai?
A shinai is for connecting people and when we it is used correctly it does not touch men or kote … it touch the hearts of people
